Key Achievements |
Prevented mining on the Great Barrier Reef |
Formed as the Queensland Littoral Society, AMCS successfully contested and defeated a proposal to mine limestone on the Great Barrier Reef in the 1960's. This success led to the campaign to protect the reef from mining. |
Secured the Great Barrier Reef as a marine park |
AMCS lead the campaign, which eventually involved numerous groups that secured the reef in a Marine Park and later recognised it as a World Heritage Area and valued ecotourism destination. |
Expanded Great Barrier Reef green zones |
Working with our conservation partners, AMCS secured the public support necessary to protect 33.4% of the reef in 'green zones' and helped secure a profitable future for the reef's thriving ecotourism industry. |
Ningaloo Reef saved |
AMCS and its allies protected Ningaloo Reef, WA (Australia's largest fringing coral reef) from an inappropriate marina development. With overwhelming support from the public, AMCS further succeeded in securing 34% of the Ningaloo Marine Park in green zones, where all life is safe from harm. |
Global ban on commercial whaling |
AMCS helped spearhead this successful campaign in the1980's. We remain vigilant on current threats to whales in Australia's waters. |
Live shark finning banned in Australia |
Thanks to AMCS, shark finning at sea is now illegal in all Australian states and the Northern Territory. |
Seacage fish farming stopped |
AMCS protected sea lion colonies in South Australia from unsustainable sea cage aquaculture development. We have also contested unsustainable sea cage aquaculture proposals in New South Wales and Queensland. |
Sustainable Seafood revolution |
Launching our highly successful Sustainable Seafood Guide, AMCS is now revolutionising the way we view our seafood and the fishing and aquaculture methods that provide it. More and more Australians are recognising their part in protecting our precious oceans by choosing their seafood responsibly. |
