Nicola Temple,
Coral Sea Campaigner |
|
|
Nicola Temple joined the marine conservation movement nearly two decades ago, when she put on SCUBA gear for the first time and truly saw what was at risk of being lost. Enamored with the ocean, she pursued a marine biology degree followed by a Masters in fish biology. She worked on the west coast of Canada coordinating an extensive research program focused on the conservation of wild Pacific salmon. This research translated directly into policy change, new strategies in fisheries management, and a broad public outreach campaign.
As our Coral Sea Campaigner, Nicola feels privileged to be working in Australia, in another ecologically iconic region of the world where she holds great hope for large gains in marine conservation. Nicola works with the rest of the AMCS team and our conservation allies to build support for the world's largest marine reserve, a proposal that would see over 1,000,000 km2 of the Coral Sea fully protected; an enormous contribution to the global protection of our marine environment.

Prue Barnard,
Northern Marine Campaigner |
|
|
Prue's passion for our oceans developed while living on the east coast of Canada where she observed the long term environmental and social consequences of the collapse of the cod Fishery.
On returning to Australia in 1999 Prue committed to work in marine conservation to help avoid disasters like this in our seas. Prue completed a Bachelor of Administration (Marine Resources) from the Australian Maritime College. She was subsequently employed by The South East Asian Fisheries Centre as an Information Officer and more recently the Marine & Coastal Community Network as their National Assistant. Prue has also been an AMCS supporter for several years.
Prue is campaigning to protect Northern Australia's oceans through pushing for Marine Parks at both Territory and Commonwealth levels, advocating for sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and sustainable development. Prue is based out of the Darwin office.

Ben Birt, Marine Campaigner |
 |
Ben grew up on a small island between England and France and has been fascinated by the sea from a young age. Endless summers spent playing around on, in and under the water eventually led him to a Masters degree in Marine Science (Coastal and Ocean Policy).
Now based in Sydney, Ben has experience campaigning on a range of marine issues from shark conservation to marine parks, fisheries and sustainable seafood. With growing pressure on the marine environment, he feels that now more than ever we need to work out how we can live with and enjoy our wonderful marine environment without ruining it. Ben feels it is important to "reconnect" with that environment whenever possible and uses this as an excuse to surf, snorkel and dive as often as possible.
Ben is working as a Marine Campaigner for AMCS and working nationally on sustainable seafood, sustainable fisheries management and shark conservation, and also works with the Nature Conservation Council NSW. |

Jacki Boyce,
Communications Officer |
|
|
Jacki's love for the marine environment flourished from growing up spending weekends and holidays on the beautiful beaches of the southern Gold Coast. From building sandcastles and boogie boarding as a child, to scuba diving, attempting to surf and studying the oceans as an adult, Jacki has been inspired and enamoured by the sea all her life.
Jacki pursued her passion for the marine environment by studying a Bachelor of Marine Studies at the University of Queensland. Majoring in marine biology and ecology, she also completed her Honours in Coastal Management and spent a year studying marine biology and scuba diving in California, USA. She has also worked at UQ as a research assistant in the geography and environmental management department.
An all-rounder, Jacki also studied IT and communication design, so has brought her wealth of knowledge to AMCS as our Communications Officer. She is proud to dedicate part of each week to our work on the Coral Sea campaign, where we seek to protect one of the world's last refuges for large marine wildlife such as sharks, marlin, tuna, turtles and whales. Jacki is passionate about educating and inspiring others to enjoy and care for our amazing yet under-protected oceans.
