The Wanderer by KP Neilson

The Wanderer, oil on linen, 84 x 51cm, Market value: $2000

Artist's Statement

The Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans) has the largest wingspan of any living bird: between 251-350 cm. As a result, it is capable of remaining in the air without beating its wings for several hours at a time.

The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) lists the Wandering Albatross' status as Vulnerable. The biggest threat to their survival is long line fishing; however, pollution, mainly plastics and fishing hooks, are also taking a toll.

Many thanks to Dr. Mike Double of the Australian Marine Mammal Centre, Australian Antarctic Division, for allowing me to use his remarkable photo as a reference for my painting.

Private

In 2003 I established an art business, The Pet Painter, specialising in oil portraits of pets. Work can be viewed at
www.thepetpainter.com.au . May I note that while this venture has been a rewarding and autonomous source of income, as well as the bulk of my public art practice the last four years, it is not the sum of my artistic oeuvre.
