A Message from Chon.

In August 2020 I had an encounter with a juvenile white shark. It knocked me from my surfboard and for a time, I was alone in the water with it. It bit me twice and hung on.

Suddenly my partner was beside me, bobbing in the water. He punched the shark 5-8 times in the head before it let go. We weren’t sure it would. I kept my leg. Just. It was a mess and every day since I have aimed for recovery. Every day I have done rehab, physio, taken supplements and devoted hours to therapies.

But I am not a “miracle story”. I am still partially paralysed and have chronic pain. I have a life -long disability.

Sometimes I am angry, often I am deeply lonely. But I don’t stop. I don’t want to, because I am here and am scared of the future. So I want to make the most of the present and do what I can for the things I care about. And that includes shark conservation.

To challenge my body and push myself for more recovery, I am putting myself on the line.

I am training for 12 weeks in preparation for a real boxing match and I want you to fight with me. Sign up to fight yourself. Come along and watch. Donate to AMCS. Fight to protect what we care about, to say how proud we are of our astonishing natural world.

Soon after the shark bite, I spoke in the media about the plight of sharks throughout our oceans. Globally, a third of all shark and rays species face the threat of extinction from overfishing. Australia’s waters are a lifeboat for them and while we manage them better than most countries, we have a long way to go to improve their outlook.

Sharks are critical to healthy ocean ecosystems which is why I will be punching for them in my upcoming bout.

If you would like to support me on this journey by making a donation, you will be contributing to healthy oceans.

Each donation will help AMCS further its work to protect our precious ocean wildlife.

– Chantelle Doyle
